The photographic exhibition “Memory Lab III – Traces” features works from Tanja Boukal, Jonathan Olley, Henning Rogge, Attila Floszmann, Sarah Schönfeld and Tatiana Lecomte.
The photographs refer to different historical conflicts.
While the subject of Jonathan Olley’s photographs are the trenches of the First World War, Henning Rogge has pinpointed the remaining craters of the Second World War in the German provinces. Both – along with the photographs of Tatiana Lecomte and Sarah Schönfeld, however, share the common trait of referring to conflicts that are not really or only partially visible in the image. Nothing evokes the barbarity of war, unless it solicits the memory and historical knowledge of the visitor.
With a view to more recent history, Attila Floszmann’s work on the conflict in Libya and Tanja Boukal’s “knitted” pictures evoking the uprisings in Arab countries or the situation of immigrants and war refugees, only indicate events and conflicts, rather than openly address them as a war photographer or correspondent would do.
The images track reality, but their power is in the capacity to kindle emotions, if the visitor fails to remember what happened.
As part of the framework of the fifth edition of the European Month of Photography, this is the third part of the four-part project, with the other three segments of the exhibition displayed at Casino Luxembourg – Forum d’art contemporain, MUDAM, and Musée national d’histoire et d’art (MNHA).
