On Thursday 13 August 2026, holiday rental marketplace HomeToGo published its 2026 European Hidden Gem Index, with Luxembourg's Vianden placing sixth overall.

The index ranked 50 lesser-known destinations across more than 25 European countries. According to HomeToGo, all remained outside the 5,000 most-searched destinations in Europe for summer 2026.

Vianden received a total score of 56.01, placing it just behind Potes in Spain (56.05) and ahead of Dinant in neighbouring Belgium (55.97).

The Luxembourg town scored particularly highly for being "under the radar" category, receiving 9.54 out of ten. It also achieved a score of 9.80 for walking opportunities and 8.62 for summer warmth. Its other scores were 8.83 for accommodation costs, 7.49 for its scenic setting, 6.37 for gastronomy and 5.36 in the "rising star" category.

HomeToGo calculated the median cost of holiday accommodation around Vianden at €54.40 per person per night during summer 2026.

The holiday rental marketplace highlighted Vianden's hilltop castle, wooded walking trails and streets alongside the River Our, describing the town as a "real-life fairytale".

Overall, Sozopol in Bulgaria topped the 2026 ranking with a score of 57.74, followed by Beddgelert in Wales (57.20) and Vogüé in France (57.00). Bacharach in Germany and Potes in Spain completed the top five. After sixth-placed Vianden, Dinant in Belgium ranked seventh, followed by Saaremaa in Estonia, Lake Bohinj in Slovenia and Chiavenna in Italy.

HomeToGo said it compiled the index using its own search trends and holiday accommodation pricing data alongside information on summer weather, walking routes, food and drink and the scenery and surroundings of each destination.
