Salaried employment in Luxembourg has risen by 0.9% in the second quarter of 2019 and by 3.8% over twelve months, according to Statec.
This increase in the second quarter has been attributed to job creation in administration and other public services (up 4.4% over one year), as well as in financial and insurance activities (up 4.3%). These two branches accounted for 37% of net job creation between the second quarters of 2018 and 2019.
The favourable development of the administrative and public services sector primarily resulted from jobs related to central administration and social action, whilst that of financial and insurance activities was mainly due to the financial companies as well as investment fund and pension management.
These branches covered over 32% of salaried employment and accounted for 37% of net job creation between the fourth quarters of 2017 and 2018. During this period, the number of cross-border workers also rose slightly faster than that of residents (+4.9% compared to +2.9%). Among residents, the number of workers from the European Union increased by 1.9%, while that of non-EU workers increased by 9.0%.
