4 Students awarded scholarships from Fondation Pierre Werner;

On 25 January 2018, two doctoral candidates and two Master students at the Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance at the University of Luxembourg (Uni.lu) received the Pierre Werner Scholarship as part of a collaboration between Fondation Pierre Werner under the aegis of Fondation de Luxembourg and the University of Luxembourg.

The event took place in the premises of the University of Luxembourg in Kirchberg in the presence of family members of Pierre Werner and the Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance of the University. 

The laureates were chosen for their past academic achievements, the originality and the potential of their work as well as its relevance and impact in promoting European integration and the ideals of Pierre Werner, former Prime Minister of Luxembourg and prominent European politician.

The jury for the pre-selection of candidates was composed of Prof. Stefan Braum (then Dean of the Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance), Prof. Jörg Gerkrath (Head of the Doctoral School of Law) and Prof. Tibor Neugebauer (Programme Director for Finance and the Doctoral School in Economics and Finance). Based on the pre-selection of the jury, the Management Committee of Fondation Pierre Werner, chaired by Mr. Luc Frieden, decided to split the total grant of €25,000 for the four following outstanding young students and researchers:

- Dimitrios Kafteranis (Greece), doctoral candidate in law, who is preparing a thesis on the topic of “The protection of whistleblowers under EU law: towards a new legal framework”

- Emilija Pashoska (Macedonia), Master in Economics and Finance student, who uses a game theory approach to her study of the relationship between the EU and Norway.

- Ditmir Sufaj (Albania), Master in Economics and Finance student, who is researching the impact of macroeconomic variables on stock market performance across EU member states.

- Olivier Voordeckers (Belgium), doctoral candidate in law, who is writing his dissertation on the topic of “The single supervisory mechanism: towards a new interaction between European and national legal orders.

The Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance, Prof. Anke Müßig thanked the Fondation Pierre Werner for their initiative: “We are proud that you chose us as your partner for this project, which, at its heart, is about the promotion of European integration.”

Tonika Hirdman, Director General of Fondation de Luxembourg added: “We are very honoured to host Fondation Pierre Werner under the aegis of Fondation de Luxembourg. We wish all four recipients of the scholarship the best success in the completion of their studies at the University of Luxembourg.”
