Frankfurt-Hahn Airport revealed on Friday that construction is underway on a new 3,800 metre airport ramp to connect it to a new building - the hangar of the HAITEC Aircraft Maintenance GmbH company.
The large-scale project is taking place on a 17,000 m2 site, with significant steps taken in the construction of the new hangar. The steelwork has been constructed and the roof covered, with the side walls clad.
"For construction of the new run-up, we will move around 80,000 tonnes of earth," explained Michael Rössel, Head of Infrastructure at Frankfurt-Hahn Airport, who is responsible for the project which will see 11,500 tonnes of concrete and 5,000 tonnes of asphalt will be installed. "If an aircraft like the A380 rolls over the runway, it easily takes a weight of more than 300 tonnes altogether. The ramp, taxiways and runways must bear this weight - the construction of services is correspondingly complicated.
He continued: "The current project especially has to be implemented in several phases, so that the construction site does not impede access to the runway. Among other things, during the construction period which will continue until late August, a temporary runway will be built, so that the existing HAITEC maintenance hander and the underlying Ryanair airline hall continues to be reached by aircraft. The construction will not impair current airport operations."
The airport ramp project will involve an overall investment of €4.4 million from Frankfurt-Hahn Airport, with a tender won by the Schnorpfeil company from Treis-Karden on the Moselle. The funds have been provided from the same of the hangar land to the HAITEC company, which invested €30 million at the Hahn location in order to construct its new maintenance hangar.
"With the construction of the run-up, we are now on the home straight for the major new hangar building project," commented Airport CEO, Markus Bunk. "With the opening, planned for this autumn, of the 16,000 foot2 maintenance hangar, Frankfurt-Hahn Airport will significantly expand its service portfolio. As an international location it is a gain, to which we gladly contribute our share."
