Leisure tourism of the resident population has remained stable in 2014, according to STATEC.
STATEC, the government's statistics portal, has reported that nearly 83% of residents aged 15+ have undertaken at least one trip with at least one overnight stay, which corresponds to 1.5 million trips .
The destinations also remained unchanged: Germany and France have been favorite destinations for years at 18% and 21% respectively, followed by Belgium and Spain at 9% and 8% respectively. One trip in two is reserved, at least in part, online. In addition to these 1.5 million trips with overnight stays, 1.4 million day trips were taken to neighbouring countries. The majority of people, some 307,000, took a trip for at least four nights and only 15% took shorter trips.
It was found that 18 % of the population did not go on holiday. The most commonly-expressed reason (30%) was simply the desire to stay home, followed by financial or health reasons. Foreign residents were reported to travel more than national residents, with the exception being the Portuguese population which had a travel intensity lower than the average.
Reasons for travel dispalyed three motives, with general recreation and relaxation as the most common at 33%, visits to friends and family at 26%, and culutral visits to exhibitions or cities at 16%.
