Luxembourg's Ministry of Mobility and Public Works has issued a statement in relation to an accident that occurred recently on the German Moselle.
The German authorities informed the ministry that a barge hit the downstream gate of the Müden lock on the German Moselle shortly after 13:00 on Sunday 8 December 2024. The incident caused "major damage" requiring the complete replacement of both gates.
Due to this damage, navigation on the Moselle has been cut in two and makes any crossing "impossible".
The ministry assured that the German authorities, responsible for managing this infrastructure, are working actively to ensure the resumption of navigation "as soon as possible". According to their estimates, the work should be completed by the end of March 2025.
The ministry said it has offered its support to the German authorities and is maintaining close contact with the operator of the port of Mertert as well as with the companies concerned, in order to closely monitor the development of the situation and ensure the continuity of the transport of goods.
