Since the start of the COVID-19 crisis in Luxembourg, Cargolux has managed to deliver 768 tonnes of medical equipment from China to Luxembourg.

On 26-27 April 2020, Luxembourg's Deputy Prime Minister François Bausch, who also serves as Minister for Mobility and Public Works and Minister of Defence, visited the Cargocenter of LuxairCARGO at the airport and the intermodal terminal of Bettembourg-Dudelange in order to attend the reception of various healthcare materials required in the fight against COVID-19.

Cargolux, the Cargocenter and CFL multimodal have played a key role for the logistics unit in the secure transport, storage and delivery of healthcare materials during the ongoing health crisis. Indeed, Cargolux has experienced an increase in demand since mid-March. Thanks to the efficiency of the air bridge connecting Luxembourg with China, the cargo company was able to guarantee the delivery of 768 tonnes of medical equipment to the Grand Duchy. This figure is equivalent to around ten Boeing 747-type cargo planes.

Likewise, Cargolux has been operating flights throughout Europe as well as in the United States in order to guarantee the transport of essential materials during these times of crisis. In addition to its regular network, the company also carried out a large number of charter flights. Cargolux's global network enabled it to supply not only Europe, but also other continents with essential equipment during this period.

For its part, CFL multimodal has been contributing to the national effort to combat coronavirus by ensuring the storage and transport of medical equipment on behalf of the Luxembourg State. In addition, CFL has seconded personnel specialised in logistics to the State crisis unit in the logistics and purchasing team.

Nearly 2,000 pallets have been stored in the CFL multimodal warehouse at Eurohub Sud. On the one hand, semi-trailers travel between the airport and the CFL multimodal warehouse depending on the arrivals of aircraft; on the other hand, small carriers ensure the supply of treatment centers with masks, gowns and protective glasses, gloves, overshoes and other protective equipment.

Up to 20 people can be mobilised daily, depending on the level of activity, to provide logistics.

Commenting on experience over the past few weeks, François Bausch said: "We must be proud and reassured to have a logistics hub of this scale in Luxembourg".
