The Jan de Nul Group, a leading expert in dredging and marine construction activities based in Luxembourg, today announced the outcome of its project in Egypt.
The Group reported that on Saturday 25 July 2015, the very first three vessels sailed through the new Suez Canal which the Group has been working on since it won 80% of the construction contract through a joint venture with NMDC, Boskalis and Van Oord in October 2014.
The Suez Canal represents the shortest shipping route between Europe and Asia, and a new Canal was therefore constructed next to the existing one to enlarge its capacity for transport and increase the industrial activity of the area. The dredging work began in November 2014 and has since dredged 200 million m3 - 20 million m3 more than was initially expected.
The extent of the work performed made this project the largest cutter project ever, and followed the restoration and development carried out by the Jan de Nul Group on the Panama Canal last month, which also aimed to expand the Canal as a fast route for maritime travel.
