The Upper Sûre Nature Park has announced that it is organising its traditional water festival under a new concept on Europe Day, Tuesday 9 May 2023, and offering an on-site stem cell donation possibility for a local child recently diagnosed with leukaemia.
There will be various family-friendly activities on offer from 10:00 to 17:00 as part of the water festival at the Kaul leisure centre in Wiltz. There will be a traditional raft construction followed by a raft race to mark the occasion.
The day will offer several workshops, activities and information stands, water tastings and a photography exhibition of the “Fotoclub Wooltz”.
The SIDEN northern wastewater union will offer guided tours at 13:30 and 15:30, allowing visitors to discover how the wastewater treatment works in the treatment plant. In addition, a walk on the theme "Drinking water and epidemics in the 19th century in Wiltz" will take place at 11:00 and 14:00. Registrations for the four visits can be done in advance via email: info@naturpark-sure.lu. Free shuttle buses will run at the times indicated between the water festival and the various places to visit.
One of the highlights, reported to have become a tradition over the past decade, is the construction of rafts, followed by a race with them. All necessary materials will be provided free of charge. In the final raft race, there will be a chance to win a series of prizes, such as a ride on the solar boat.
The water festival will also offer a show by the professor Aqua-Wass at 10:30 and 12:15. The professor will prepare for his first world tour and he will explain the vital importance of water. He will use different elements from his "portable laboratory" and share his fascination with this unusual element.
The nearby restaurant will offer a menu specially adapted to the water festival, with regional and seasonal ingredients.
For the first time, Philippe Ernzer from Météo Boulaide will be present. He will give a lecture on meteorological phenomena in Luxembourg at 14:30.
The Upper Sûre dam reportedly supplies around 80% of Luxembourg households with drinking water.
The nature park lamented that a child was recently diagnosed with leukaemia. During the water festival, the Upper Sûre Nature Park, in collaboration with Plooschter Projet, has organised the possibility of registering as a stem cell donor on site. Anyone meeting the following conditions can register: 18-45 years old (from sixteen years old with parental consent), has had a maximum of two pregnancies (including miscarriages), weighs more than 50 kg, is in good health, can have blood or sputum taken, is of Luxembourgish or German nationality or resides in one of these countries.
Entry to the water festival is free.
