The Luxembourg National Data Service (LNDS) has published its Annual Report 2024, highlighting a year of notable progress in enabling data reuse and generating impact in collaboration with its partners.
In 2024, the LNDS grew its team by 80% and expanded its service portfolio by 50%. It worked with data partners across ten domains, including health, education, mobility and the environment, and completed 23 data projects aimed at generating value through data reuse.
Building on its expanding capabilities, LNDS introduced five additional data services and five new platforms in 2024, further strengthening its ability to support data partners in generating impact through data reuse, the organisation reported. Data protection remained a central pillar of this work, with privacy-by-design and by-default principles integrated across all services and products, under the guidance of the organisation’s Data Protection Officer and Ethical, Legal and Social Implications (ELSI) experts.
Bert Verdonck, CEO of LNDS, highlighted the organisation’s progress and cross-sectoral ambitions: “We are proud of the growth of our team and service offering, as well as the expansion of our support to more domains, including health, education, mobility, environment, energy and connectivity. This expansion allows us to identify and drive synergies in expertise, services and tools that can make a significant impact across sectors.”
Since its inception in 2022, LNDS has secured €5.4 million in subsidy funding. In 2024, its participation in European-level projects doubled to fifteen, spanning four programmes ranging from health data reuse to the development of an energy data space. These contributions support Luxembourg’s role in Europe’s digital transformation and help implement relevant EU legislation at national level.
Romain Martin, Chairman of LNDS’ Board of Directors, highlighted the organisation’s strategic involvement at the national level: “In 2024, the LNDS team made significant contributions to updating Luxembourg’s national Data and AI strategies, while supporting various teams in shaping flagship projects designed to generate major societal and economic impact.”
The organisation’s progress was showcased during the second edition of the Data Summit Luxembourg, held on 11 December 2024. The event brought together 500 participants from academia, government and industry to foster collaboration and promote data sharing and analysis. Keynote addresses were delivered by Luxembourg’s Minister for Digitalisation, Stéphanie Obertin, and Minister for Research and Higher Education, Elisabeth Margue. The event also marked the launch of the Luxembourg AI Factory. The third edition is scheduled for 2 December 2025.
The Annual Report is accessible on the LNDS Website.
