The national statistics institute STATEC has presented the first results of Luxembourg's 37th population census, conducted between 8 November and 5 December 2021.

Compared to the last census in 2011 (512,353 residents), Luxembourg witnessed a population increase of 25.7% (i.e. 131,588 people), reaching 643,941 residents. This was fifteen times higher than that of the European Union (EU-27), which experienced growth of 1.7% during the same period.

In 2021, the proportion of women was slightly lower (49.6%) than that of men and again slightly lower than a decade earlier (50.2% in 2011). STATEC noted that this trend has continued since 2014, particularly due to the over-representation of men among the migrant population.

The ageing of Luxembourg's population also continued, with the average age of residents reaching 39.7 years in 2021, i.e. one year older than in 2011. Moreover, the number of centenarians increased by 35.8%, from 67 people in 2011 to 91 people in 2021.

STATEC noted that the age structure of the population has changed in the last decades, with the population of young people aged nineteen and under becoming increasingly small. Meanwhile, residents aged 40 to 64 and those aged 80 and over have increased in relative numbers.
