As part of the Queer Loox film series in Luxembourg, Rotondes will be screening the documentary 'Wariazone', exploring gender beyond the traditional female-male model.
This 2011 documentary, created by Estonian film-makers Kiwa and Terje Toomistu, highlights the experiences of 40 Indonesian trangender women, also known as 'waria', who challenge binary conceptualisations of sex and gender often evoked in modern, industrial societies. Waria form a well-known group of people interwoven into the cultural fabric of the country, which holds the world's largest Muslim community.
In showing how warias are pushed into a no man's land on the outskirts of society, 'Wariazone' questions the politicisation of morality and religion in Indonesia. Attempts to raise public awareness and discussion of warias has conversely enabled extreme religious groups to attack them on the grounds of "protecting public morals" against 'explicit' sexuality.
Queer Look was started in December 2014 as a queer-feminist film series, exploring identities that subvert traditional categories, highlighting different experiences in male and female sex/gender identity and homo-, bi- and heterosexuality. Every two months, the series presents feature films, documentaries and video arts with a vew to establishing a queer-feminist platform in Luxembourg.
The screening of 'Wariazone' will be preceded by the music clip 'L.A.lienation', produced by German music duo Andrea Neumann and Sabine Ercklentz together with photographer Anja Weber.
The event will begin at 19:00 on Wednesday 27 April 2016 and is open to the public for free. The film is in English, Indonesian and Javanese with English subtitles. For more information, click here.
