Little Britain has announced that it will close its doors at the end of June.
The shop, currently situated on Route d'Arlon in Mamer, previously had been in two different locations in Strassen before moving to its current location where it has been operating a café in addition to its traditional food, books and household items.
The store grew from the concept of the former Magasin Anglais which had been based on the Allée Scheffer on the Glacis in Luxembourg-Limpertsberg before it moved close by to the Avenue Pasteur. Little Britain catered both for expatriates searching for products from home, as well as locals looking for something "British".
Regulars will remember the Thursday deliveries from the UK, as well as the Sunday newspapers which ensured that Saturdays and Sundays were the busiest days in the shop. However, problems in securing a reliable newspaper delivery on Sunday mornings meant that recently the shop not only stopped supplying English Sunday newspapers, but also was then shut on Sundays (from February).
The statement from Little Britain: "It is with great sadness and regret that Little Britain will be closing its doors for the last time on Thursday the 30th of June 2016 and the cafe on Saturday the 28th of May 2016. The owners and staff would like to thank all of our loyal customers for your support and friendship over the years."
When contacted by The Luxembourg Chronicle, a Little Britain spokesperson declined to comment and stressed that the statement says it all.
Expatriate shoppers still looking for a taste from home now have the Chapter1 Bookstore in Belair and Eirelux in Howald.
