On Friday 7 March 2025, Luxembourg's national railway company, the CFL, announced the opening of two renovated waiting rooms at the central rail station in Luxembourg-Gare.
In a press release, the CFL announced that the waiting rooms, consisting of 77 seats, will be open daily from 06:00 to 22:00. The CFL added that, through the coordination of its subsidiary CFL Immo, it is gradually redeveloping the waiting rooms of the country's main stations, based on a configuration that has been operating in Ettelbruck since 2021 and at the Luxembourg Station Reception and Sales Centre since 2022. The waiting room at Esch-sur-Alzette station (seventeen seats) has been available in this new configuration since 6 December 2024.
The CFL added that, after the opening to the public of the small renovated waiting room at the end of December 2024, the large waiting room at Luxembourg Central Station is now open. The renovation of the waiting areas was split into two stages to guarantee continuity of service throughout the work.
Roxane Prévost, Director of CFL Immo, stated: "We are delighted to create new modern and comfortable waiting rooms that are important for the CFL brand image and the quality of service offered to customers. The new reception concept fits perfectly into the general harmony of the various stations concerned and adapts to different needs, including the development of sales areas or commercial units".
The CFL described the main features of the waiting rooms at Luxembourg Station as follows:
- comfort: 77 individual padded seats and eight comfortable stools. As in the stations mentioned above, these seats are integrated into wooden furniture punctuated with floral elements;
- connectivity: the armrests placed between the seats have a USB and USB-C socket. Electrical sockets are also available near the information screens. These infrastructures complete the high-speed Internet connection offer "CFL Free WiFi" available in all CFL stations and stops;
- accessibility: four spaces are available for customers with reduced mobility or for those travelling with a child in a pushchair;
- passenger information: screens provide information on the arrival and departure times of trains at the station;
- respect for the environment: waste sorting stations are integrated into the new furniture.
The CFL noted that the stations concerned will be equipped with new services that complement mobility, as part of the CFL's cross-cutting "Stations of Tomorrow" project.
The opening in May 2023 of the first CFL Cactus Shoppi at Luxembourg Station and the deployment of the Snack O'Quai vending machine network in many stations is a result of this approach. In 2025, a new service area will open at Luxembourg Station next to the renovated waiting rooms. Additional CFL Cactus Shoppi sales points are also planned for this year at the Mersch, Bettembourg and Diekirch stations.
Marc Wengler, CFL's Managing Director, stated: "For us, ensuring the satisfaction of our customers also means asking them how they imagine their stations of tomorrow. By fostering contact and dialogue with our customers, we ensure that our stations truly meet their needs”.
