On Saturday 29 May 2021, the International School of Luxembourg (ISL) Class of 2021 graduated in the school’s premises.
The graduation ceremony took place in the ISL Lower School auditorium, in line with social distancing and precautionary health measures. Students could attend in person and were greeted by the cheers of their teachers and other ISL staff members upon arrival, before walking through the school on a red carpet. Parents and families of the 104 graduating students were able to follow the ceremony via live streaming.
In her opening speech, ISL Director Nicki Crush, for whom this was the final graduation ceremony before her retirement at the end of the school year, congratulated the Class of 2021 for their resilience and achievements, before sharing words of wisdom with them: “There are so many opportunities awaiting you out there and exciting challenges to experience as you start to create the next page of your own individual stories. Make the most of those opportunities, take the initiative, make a difference to the world, no matter how small it is. But take responsibility for your actions and stand up for what you believe in”.
The ceremony included speeches from the faculty and students elected speakers, as well as a student musical performance.
During his final remark to the Class of 2021, Upper School Principal Iain Fish concluded: “Your lives and futures will not be defined by the pandemic in the same way as they will not be defined by your report cards or your exams’ results. Your lives will be big and they will be surprising. Some will be remarkable in ways we cannot begin to predict. All of you will be filled with experiences".
