Luxembourg's Ministry of Education, Childhood and Youth has reported that around 107,153 students will return to school this month for the start of the new academic year; students in adult training courses and language learners at the Institut national des langues (INL) bring this number to 152,153.

Some 58,317 pupils are enrolled in primary schools across Luxembourg for the 2020/21 school year. This includes 52,043 pupils in public schools and 6,274 in private schools.

Luxembourg's secondary schools will see the return of 48,836 students, 39,005 of whom are in the public school system whilst the remaining 9,831 will attend private schools.

These numbers have increased year-on-year since 2014/15, when a total of 98,858 students were enrolled in schools across the country. Last year (2019/20) saw the enrolment of a total of 105,419 students.

The public secondary school with the most students this academic year is Lycée technique Mathias Adam (1,914), whilst Athénée is the classical secondary school with the highest number of students (1,362 enrolled in classical education out of a total of 1,587 students).

The International School of Luxembourg (ISL), which already reopened to all students on 27 August, and St George's International School Luxembourg, which reopened on 7 September, counted a total of 1,356 and 855 students, respectively.

Classes will resume in public primary schools in Luxembourg next Tuesday 15 September, followed by the reopening of public secondary schools (for new students) on Wednesday 16 September. All students will be back to school on Thursday 17 September 2020.
