On Thursday 25 April 2019, St George's International School in Luxembourg-Hamm held a Jazz and Afternoon Tea celebration of St George's Day.

The school's principal, Dr Christian Barkei, addressed the audience in the school's auditorium and said that this the school's enrolment figures year hit 800 students this term for the first time; a milestone for St George's which still retains its friendly and family atmosphere despite now being a big school which now has an annual budget in excess of €11m.

He also mentioned that next year, 2020, will see the 30th anniversary of the school which started off with 3 teachers and 20 students in rented accommodation; now children of St George's students are enrolling as students themselves - a clear international flavour (this year, Bhutan, the country that measures gross national happiness, was added as the 60th nationality).

He recalled that St George was from originally from Syria and is the patron saint too of Georgia, amongst other countries.

The school's Head boy (Ewan, year 12) and Head girl (Hannah, year 13) also addressed the invited audience which included the British Ambassador to Luxembourg, John Marshall, and representatives of the international business and social communities in the Grand Duchy.

The speeches were followed by a series of musical performances by students, including a violin solo and a jazz combo, while the guests were served afternoon tea of cucumber sandwiches, sausage rolls, scones with jam and cream and more...
