On Tuesday 6 January 2026, India's Minister of External Affairs, Dr Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, paid a working visit to Luxembourg.

The visit included an audience with Grand Duke Guillaume at the Grand Ducal Palace, as well as meetings with Luxembourg's Prime Minister Luc Frieden and the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Xavier Bettel.

Discussions with Prime Minister Frieden focused on matters of mutual interest, aimed at strengthening bilateral relations, as well as major international issues.

Dr Jaishankar shared on social media: "Pleased to meet Prime Minister Luc Frieden of Luxembourg this morning. Conveyed warm greetings of [Indian Prime Minister] Narendra Modi. Discussed our growing cooperation in financial services, investments, technology & innovation. Thank him for his support for stronger India-EU ties.”

Prime Minister Frieden commented: "During his visit to Luxembourg, I had a good exchange with India's Minister of External Affairs, Dr S. Jaishankar. Our talks focused on strengthening our nations' bilateral ties and key global developments."

The working session between Deputy Prime Minister Bettel and Minister Jaishankar provided an opportunity to review bilateral relations, which have deepened in recent years. Both parties highlighted the successful integration of the Indian diaspora in Luxembourg, which currently amounts to 5,474 residents and constitutes the tenth largest foreign community in the country.

Discussions also explored cooperation in the sustainable finance, digital and space sectors.

On international issues, they addressed relations between the European Union (EU) and India. Minister Bettel emphasised the importance of this partnership and the need for ongoing dialogue, stating: "The relationship between the European Union and India is multifaceted, and it is important to seize the opportunities of this partnership."

He reiterated Luxembourg's support for the swift conclusion of a free trade agreement between the EU and India, expressing hope that both parties could make progress in the negotiations to achieve the signing of this agreement.

Dr Jaishankar said: "We've come a long way. For us, we really see Luxembourg as a very important partner [...] at a very crucial time in the development of our own ties with the European Union."

On social media, Minister Bettel added: "Delighted to welcome India's Minister of External Affairs,  Dr S. Jaishankar, to Luxembourg. Today's meeting once again underscored the strong bilateral ties between India and Luxembourg. We had a productive exchange across key areas, including finance, space, the digital sector, as well as international affairs."

Following his audience with the Grand Duke, Dr Jaishankar stated: "Honoured to call on HRH Grand Duke Guillaume of Luxembourg this afternoon. Conveyed the warm greetings of President Droupadi Murmu. Value his positive sentiments for India, and for deepening our bilateral partnership."

Speaking to Chronicle.lu, Selvaraj Alagumalai, Honorary Consul General of India to Luxembourg, described the visit as "timely and impactful", saying it reaffirmed "the strong evolving bond" between India and Luxembourg. He added that it was "a proud moment for the Indian diaspora in Luxembourg, as Dr S. Jaishankar's visit reaffirms India's close connection with its global family", and noted the positive interaction between the minister and members of the Indian community.
