The Ministry of National Education, Childhood and Youth has rejected a statement from the “Wee2050 / Nee 2015” initiative in which it is implied that the Education Minister would have redirected the ministry’s education policy towards French literacy for Luxembourg government school students.
The statement reportedly alleged that the Minister acted under pressure from the French political party in Luxembourg, UDI Luxembourg.
According to the ministry’s statement, it does not envisage the introduction of literacy in French at primary schools in Luxembourg. Minister Claude Meisch has repeatedly emphasised this position in the past.
However, the ministry said, ”Wee2050 / Nee2015" persists in conveying this message, despite repeated official clarifications and positions.”
The Ministry emphasised that its language education policy is geared towards better integration of all children into the Luxembourg school system. That is why he designed the multilingual education project in day-care centres, to the benefit of all children.
Young children for whom Luxembourgish is not their mother tongue will benefit from an early familiarity with this language. Luxembourgish children will benefit from a playful contact with French and will therefore discover at a younger age the pleasure of communicating in this language. All will thus be better prepared for their schooling.
In primary and high school, the Ministry said that it intends to strengthen the role of Luxembourgish as a language of integration and a common language for all pupils in public schools.
The ambition of educational policy is therefore to design a school that gives all students a chance of success, regardless of their culture and family language said the ministry.
To support the contrary by repeating untruths as "Wee2050 / Nee2015" has done is therefore bull-headed.
