The Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Jean Asselborn, will participate on 5 April 2017 in the Brussels conference on helping the future of Syria and the countries of the region.
The conference will be co-chaired by the European Union (EU), Germany, Kuwait, Norway, Qatar, the United Kingdom and the United Nations and will bring together ministerial representatives from 70 delegations, including the EU and The region, but also the international community as a whole, the United Nations, major donors and civil society, as well as humanitarian and development organisations.
The conference will provide an opportunity to review the collective position of the international community in meeting the commitments made at the London Conference in February 2016 and to decide on additional measures to be taken to meet the needs of the victims of the crisis. It will reaffirm the existing commitments and, with a view to responding to the coordinated calls of the United Nations, will provide additional assistance to Syrians, both in Syria and neighbouring countries, as well as to the respective host communities.
The discussions will also highlight how the international community can contribute to a lasting solution to the Syrian conflict as part of an inclusive and Syrian-led political transition process on the basis of the relevant Security Council resolutions and, In particular, United Nations Security Council Resolution 2254 and the Geneva communiqué. Similarly, the exchange of views should reaffirm the international community's commitment to continuing to provide assistance to the Syrians in need, as well as to the host communities and to assess the conditions in Which can be provided after the conclusion of an agreement, and once a credible political transition is initiated.
