Luxembourg Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Jean Asselborn will attend the Foreign Affairs Council of the European Union (EU) in Luxembourg today for discussion on the situation in Syria in the run-up to the Brussels Conference on Aid for the future of Syria and the countries of the region, to be held on Tuesday and Wednesday this week.
Ministers will debate the EU's strategy towards Syria, following the publication on 14 March of a joint Communication from the European Commission and the High Representative of the Union Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.
The Council will also consider the situation in Yemen, focusing in particular on the humanitarian situation in the country.
The Council will also discuss the situation in Libya, as a follow-up to the last debate held at the January Foreign Affairs Council session. The High Representative will report to the ministers of the first meeting of the Quartet on Libya. The Quartet was established when the United Nations, the African Union and the League of Arab States invited the EU to participate in a joint endeavour to find a solution to the problems facing Libya.
EU ministers will have an exchange of views with Ahmed Aboul-Gheit, Secretary General of the Arab League. They will discuss issues of importance to the region, such as the situation in Syria, the situation in Libya and the Middle East peace process.
