Luxembourg Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn reaffirmed Luxembourg’s commitment to raising defence spending during a NATO ministerial meeting chaired by Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg in Brussels today.
Explaining that security goes beyond simple defence, Jean Asselborn argued that discussions within NATO should not be limited to the issue of the 2% of GDP invested in Defence, while reaffirming Luxembourg commitment to gradually increase its defence contribution.
In this context, he also highlighted the importance of development cooperation for Luxembourg as an investment which improves the living conditions of people throughout the world and, in the long term, enhances stability and security, as well as prevention of conflicts. He also stressed the important role of the United Nations in this regard, calling for its potential for action and response on the ground not to be reduced by lack of resources.
