Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Jean Asselborn, is in Geneva on Monday to participate in the high level segment of the 31st session of the Human Rights Council.
Minister Asselborn is due to deliver a speech at the Palais des Nations during which he will outline the priorities of the Luxembourg Govenment with regards to human rights, including the fight against poverty, discrimination and terrorism. The speech will additionally address major issues on the international agenda, including the situation in Syria, the refugee crisis and the fate of the Palestinian people.
The United Nations Human Rights Council is made up of 47 States and has been described by UN Secretary-General, Bank Ki-moon, as "a forum and a springboard for action". Themes for the 31st session include the 50th anniversary of the International Covenants on Human Rights; climate change; the rights of persons with disabilities; rights of the child; violent extremism; incompatibility between democracy and racism; and ending the HIV/AIDS epidemic by 2030.
