Luxembourg's Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Jean Asselborn, is due to attend the Munich Security Conference taking place from 12 to 14 February 2016.
Now in its 52nd year, the Munich Security Conference has become one of the key annual events in global security policy and was recently named the best 'Think Tank Conference' in the world by the Global Go To Think Tank Index at the University of Pennsylvania. Around 30 heads of state or government and more than 70 foreign and defense ministers are expected to participate in this intensive exchange of views on current and future challenges related to security policy.
Jean Asselborn will be participating to begin with in a round table on the theme 'Europe - Missions and Visions' alongside the former Greek Foreign Minister, Dora Bakogianni, and German MEP, Markus Ferber.
On 11 February 2016, Minister Asselborn will be the guest of the editorial staff of Security Times International, the newspaper traditionally published in conjunction with the Munich conference. Here, the Luxembourg Minister will engage in a debate on international politics with Dr. Theo Sommer, former chief editor and editor of German weekly Die Zeit and the director of the Times Media group, in the presence of journalists and the German business world.
Luxembourg's Foreign Minister will then participate in the 2016 edition of the Munich Conference on Security Policy, at the invitation of President of the conference and former Ambassador Wolfgang Ischinger. Topics to be addressed include international security issues, the fight against international terrorism and Daech, the situation in Ukraine and energy security challenges. The talks will also address various humanitarian disasters and the refugee crisis affecting the world today.
Minister Asselborn is also expected to engage in discussions with colleagues and senior government officials on current issues.
