On 20 and 21 July 2015, the informal meeting of ministers responsible for competitiveness in the economy and research will take place at the European Convention Centre of Luxembourg.
Entitled "Trading beyond borders. Competing globally. What the EU can do for you ", the meeting of Ministers in charge of Economy will be held Monday 20 July 2015 and will focus on the potential benefits of consistent and thought-out European rules for companies. Ultimately, it will examine the "cost of non-Europe", the costs of border crossings related to the obligation for European companies to achieve compliance with 28 different national legislations in the digital world as well as its offline counterpart.
Before the informal meeting next Monday chaired by Étienne Schneider, the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Economy said: "On 20 July we will discuss concretely how 'good' European rules allow businesses to be more competitive, even on the global scale. To encourage a discussion which is both open and constructive, I invited several prominent speakers who will share their own experiences and perspectives with us ministers, and with Commissioner Elzbieta Bienkowska." These speakers will include former European Commissioner and Head of the World Trade Organisation Pascal Lamy, Luxembourgish businessman Gerard Lopez and President and CEO of SES, Karim Michel Sabbagh.
The informal meeting of ministers responsible for Research will be held on Tuesday 22 July 2015 and chaired by Marc Hansen, Secretary of State for Higher Education and Research. During a first working session, the ministers will discuss the integrity of research. The Luxembourg Presidency reported it will continue to emphasise the need to adapt the responsible conduct of research in order to promote a real culture of research integrity, with particular emphasis on training at all levels of the research career.
Over lunch, the European Commissioner for Research, Science, and Innovation, Carlos Moedas, will present his vision of European policies for research and innovation, showing why they should be adapted to an increasingly open and digital world and pave the way for innovation in the European Research Area (ERA).
Equal opportunities in research will be themed in the second working session. The Presidency will attach particular importance to gender equality plans for real change at the institutional level while promoting open recruitment. The goal is to make real progress to achieve a better gender balance, especially in positions of responsibility and leadership.
