On Saturday, Rugby Club Luxembourg (RCL) faced Frankfurt 1880 in their first match in the Bundesliga 1 division on the openign day of the 2016-17 season.
In front a noisy home crowd the hosts started confidently with a strong first scrum against a much larger German pack. However, it was the German side who scored first and led 13-5 at half time. In the second half the sides traded penalties before Frankfurt scored a converted try to give them a buffer to defend. Edoardo Angioni's late try for RCL was only a consolation but a score of 13-32 was no disgrace.
Head Coach Alex Van Zealand was satisfied with the team's first outing of the season. "We should not have conceded two of the trys so if we can work on our defective structure I think we can be competitive this season. The crowd gave the team a big lift today so hopefully they will return for next Saturday's fixture against SC Neuenheim at 15:00" he stated.
