Following the earthquake to hit central Italy on the night of 24 August 2016 in which almost 300 people have died, Luxembourg's Prime Minister, Xavier Bettel, visited the Italian Embassy in Luxembourg yesterday to sign a book of condolences.

On social media, Luxembourg's PM stated "It is with great sorrow that I present on behalf of the Luxembourg Government and on my own behalf, our deepest condolences to the human tragedy that befell Italy on the night of 24 August. My feelings and my thoughts are with the victims, their families and their relatives. I join in the mourning of the Italian people, I wish a speedy recovery to the many wounded."
