The Musée National d'Histoire et d'Art (MNHA) of Luxembourg will be temporarily displaying the canvas 'Le Martyre de Saint Sébastien' by Spanish artist Francisco de Zurbarán over the summer period.
Referred to by some as the 'Spanish Caravaggio', de Zurbarán was a Spanish painter whose pieces focused on religious aspects and featured monks, nuns and martyrs. de Zurbarán often employed the technique of chiaroscuro, which involved the use of strong light and dark contrasts in his paintings to achieve dramatic effects.
The 'Saint Sébastien' comes from a private collection, the Appelles Collection Luxembourg and is available for viewing to the general public for the first time as part of the exhibiton 'Œuvre invitée - Guest Work'. This exhibition represents an initiative from the MNHA which aims to establish a relationship between leaders of public and private collections and the museum's pieces.
The museum has also set up a guided tour offering information on this tableau. The next tour will be available in French on Sunday 20 September 2015 at 16:00, which will be the final date that the canvas will be available for viewing. The piece will then be transferred to the Museum Kunstpalast Düsseldorf to form part of an exhibition on the Spanish Baroque artist.
