As part of its overall road prevention strategy, the Grand Ducal Police carried out checks between mid-October and the end of December 2023 specifically dedicated to good visibility and the good technical condition of vehicles.

In total, more than 1,940 fines were issued as part of this campaign in an approach to awareness and road safety. Among these fines, 145 were issued for non-compliance or non-use of lighting (high beam, low beam and red lights). Furthermore, 120 fines concerned irregularities in tyres (e.g. insufficient grooves or no winter tyres).

In 1,678 cases, defects concerning the onboard papers or the technical condition of the vehicle were noted. In 645 of these cases, the drivers were unable to present a valid technical inspection certificate during the inspection and in 21 of the cases observed, the cars were equipped with non-regulatory, respectively unauthorised or incorrectly installed number plates (illegible or poorly fixed).

In addition to the fines mentioned, 210 summons reports with regards to lighting defects were drawn up during the preventive phase of the campaign from 16 October 2023 to 19 November 2023.

This means that in the event of non-compliance, drivers were not automatically fined, but were given five days to bring their vehicle into compliance with the legislation. The offenders then had to report to a police unit after remedying the defects.

For the safety of all road users, good visibility and the good technical condition of vehicles play a vital role, particularly in this dark season with fog, rain, cold and reduced visibility. The Police has announced they will therefore continue to carry out checks of this type as part of their daily preventive missions.

The Grand Ducal Police reminded citizens of the following preventive best practices:

  • See and be seen: in terms of general road safety, it is fundamental that drivers are vigilant and ensure they can see what is happening around them, and in particular check that the lighting is working and that the windows are clear. For pedestrians, runners and cyclists, it is important to be visible to other road users, even from a distance.
  • Technical condition of vehicles: vehicles must be in “perfect” technical condition. Depending on the weather conditions, winter tyres may be necessary. A clear field of vision must be guaranteed.
  • Safety distance and driving style: motorists should also keep sufficient distance from the vehicle in front and adapt their driving style to the weather conditions and speed limits.
