Luxembourg's Roads Administration has announced that the Markusberg tunnel on the A13 motorway will undergo upgrades in the coming weeks, primarily focusing on the electromechanical automation and communication systems within the Markusberg tunnel.

The project is aiming to enhance the tunnel's functionality. It is scheduled to commence on Sunday 5 November 2023, starting at around 18:00 and anticipated to conclude on Sunday 17 December 2023, at around 16:00.

For the most part, traffic will be maintained in a regular or bidirectional mode during the construction period. However, there will be complete closures on 26 November 2023, as well as 16 and 17 December 2023. Detailed information regarding these closures will be provided in due time.

From Sunday 5 November 2023 around 18:00 until Tuesday 7 November 2023 around 20:00, the Markusberg tunnel tube coming from Germany and heading towards Pétange will be affected. Traffic from the A13 motorway will be rerouted to the opposite tube in a two-way traffic configuration, with a maximum speed limit of 70 km/h in both directions.

From Tuesday 7 November 2023, around 20:00 until Saturday 11 November 2023, around 18:00, traffic will be diverted in a manner similar to the first diversion.

From Saturday 11 November 2023, around 18:00 until Thursday 16 November 2023 around 16:00, the slow lanes of the Markusberg tunnel in both directions will be closed.

From Monday 20 November 2023, around 08:00 until Thursday 24 November 2023, around 16:00, the slow lanes of the Markusberg tunnel in both directions will again be affected.

On Sunday 26 November 2023, around 08:00 until around 16:00, both directions of the Markusberg tunnel will be closed. Detour routes will be in place for traffic coming from the A13 motorway, heading towards Germany and Pétange.

From Tuesday 28 November 2023, around 10:00 until Wednesday 6 December 2023, around 20:00, the Markusberg tunnel coming from Germany and heading towards Pétange will be subject to the same diversion and speed limit as mentioned previously.

From Wednesday 6 December 2023, around 20:00 until Friday 15 December 2023, around 18:00, the Markusberg tunnel tube coming from Pétange and heading towards Germany will experience the same temporary closures and diversions.

Finally, from Saturday 16 December 2023 around 08:00 until Sunday 17 December 2023 around 16:00, the Markusberg tunnel will once again be closed in both directions. Detour routes will be in place for traffic heading towards Germany and Pétange from the A13 motorway.
