Monday marked the reopening of the Fort Neipperg car park in the Luxembourg-Gare district after 20 months of renovation works.

Renovations saw the Fort Neipperg car park undergo major works related to cleaning, maintenance and modernisation for the first time in 35 years.

These works included the adaptation of the two pedestrian entrances on Rue du Fort Neipperg to current standards while respecting accessibility for people with reduced mobility. A third pedestrian entrance has been installed on Rue du Chemin de Fer to guarantee better access to the Bonnevoie district and the platforms of the Gare Centrale.

In addition, all entrance elements of the car park and stairwells are transparent in order to maximise the use of natural light and increase the feeling of security in the car park. The two old staircases with the lift shaft were demolished and completely rebuilt to accommodate two modern and transparent elevators, now serving all floors and respecting the standards for people with reduced mobility. The stairs have also been redesigned to allow more space for pedestrians moving between the different floors.

The car park itself is spread across nineteen half-floors (including six underground) and offers a total of 677 parking spaces. 147 of these spaces have been widened to 2.5 metres to accommodate larger vehicles. The redesigned Fort Neipperg car park also offers 20 parking spaces for electric vehicles, fifteen for female drivers only and seventeen for people with reduced mobility (at least 3.5 metres in size), and there is a dedicated space for bicycles, supervised by a security guard.

Other additions include the installation of toilets, including one for people with reduced mobility, reserved exclusively for car park customers (accessible via the car park entrance ticket) and a new system of terminals, parking ticket payment machines and access control.

In addition to compliance to the latest safety standards, the renovated Fort Neipperg car park has been built with sustainability and energy saving in mind and has solar panels on the roof.

The budget estimate for these renovations (voted in October 2016) is €21,098,680.09 (including fees and taxes).
