Luxembourg's Ministry of Mobility and Public Works, the Road Safety Association (Sécurité routière ASBL) and the Luxembourg Police today relaunched their joint road safety awareness campaign: "Réfléchissez - Gitt siichtbar".
The campaign pursues a double objective within the context of road safety: encouraging vulnerable road users to increase their visibility on the roads; calling on motorists to be more attentive and adapt their speed in the presence of vulnerable road users.
As the days get shorter and darker, the risk of getting into a traffic accident increases considerably for vulnerable road users, such as pedestrians and cyclists. As such, the campaign calls for all road users to "Think" and "Look", whilst encouraging these more vulnerable road users to increase their visibility by wearing appropriate clothing and reflective accessories.
For pedestrians, the campaign recommends wearing light-coloured or reflective clothing, using bright or retro-reflective objects on accessories, such as bags and umbrellas, walking in front of (facing) traffic on country roads and wearing the mandatory safety vest and considering the speed and distance of approaching vehicles. Pedestrians walking their dog(s) should also consider putting a reflective collar on their pet.
Similarly, athletes, such as those going for a run or jog, are advised to wear reflective armbands and clothes with an integrated reflective element. They should also wear the mandatory safety vest when taking a road out that leaves a town.
The campaign advises cyclists and scooter users to turn on their lights, check the condition of their brakes and put reflectors on their bicycle or scooter. They should also wear a helmet and appropriate clothing with integrated reflective material.
Finally, motorists should turn on their lights in certain conditions, signal their manoeuvres in good time and adapt their speed. They should also ensure that all vehicle windows are clean, as well as taking into account the potential errors of pedestrians on the road.
The campaign, which kicks off today, Monday 28 October 2019, will be broadcast in the press, on the radio, via social media, on large road signs, on the RGTR bus network, in trams, on digital street signs and through posters and a leaflet, which will be distributed together with reflective armbands during various street marketing actions.
