Luxembourg today presented a new awareness campaign for motorcycle safety.

On 5 April 2019, Luxembourg Minister for Mobility and Public Works François Bausch, in collaboration with the Road Safety ASBL, the Public Roads Administration and the Luxembourg Police,  presented the new motorcycling action plan "D'Strooss ass keng Rennstreck" ("the road is not a race track").

Despite a decline in road accidents in recent years, motorcyclists, especially from neighbouring countries, account for a high percentage of the total number of road casualties in Luxembourg. For this reason, a "motorcyclists" working group, made up of road safety actors and several motorcyclists' associations, looked into the matter in order to develop a "Moto" action plan including thirteen security measures.

The main measure is to combat speeding. Indeed, during a radar control site between 22 June and 10 July 2018, almost half of the 443 offences were committed by motorcyclists. Consequently, the police will carry out more systematic checks of speed, papers and the condition of vehicles especially during the sunny weekends in the north of the country.

Other important measures include the securing of dangerous zones, the introduction of a fourth "Fit for your bike" day at the beginning of the season at the Colmar-Berg Driver Training Centre and, finally, strengthening social media presence to establish a relationship with the significant number of foreign motorcyclists.

The purpose of the new campaign is to educate resident motorcyclists about the dangers of excessive speed, but also to warn foreign motorcyclists that "our roads are beautiful, but dangerous", according to Minister Bausch, and that behaviour not suited to the circumstances can be fatal.

The message of this campaign, which will run between 8 April and 15 May 2019, will be presented via advertisements, various websites and social media, as well as on 45 road signs on national roads, across 340 billboards, on the back of twenty RGTR buses and the tram and 50 tram-shelter posters.
