On Thursday 6 March 2025, the Health Directorate of Luxembourg's Ministry of Health and Social Security published its weekly retrospective concerning the evolution of the main acute respiratory infections including COVID-19, influenza and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).
During week 9, from Monday 24 February to Sunday 2 March 2025, the number of influenza (flu) cases reported by laboratories decreased from 1,178 to 887 cases, down 25% compared to the previous week. Infections are still common among children. The decrease in the number of cases observed over the past four weeks confirms that the peak of the epidemic is over.
During the week in question, there were 40% influenza A and 60% influenza B among the typed results. According to the latest available data, the subtypes identified among the influenza A virus samples were A(H1)pdm9 (44.6%) and A(H3) (55.4%).
Regarding RSV, the number of reported cases decreased by 5%, with 121 confirmed cases, compared to 128 the previous week. Infections mainly affected very young children and older people (aged 80+).
The health authorities also noted a decrease in the number of cases of COVID-19 / SARS-CoV-2, from 42 to 28, down 33% compared to the previous week. However, the viral concentration detected in wastewater was reported to vary over the last five weeks and showed an increase in week 9.
The latest available sequencing data reveal that three subvariants of JN.1, the XEC variant (57.7%), the KP.3 variant (12.9%) and the LP.8.1 variant (12.9%), predominated in February.
