On Thursday 3 March 2022, the Luxembourg pharmacy association (Syndicat des Pharmaciens Luxembourgeois - SPL) has issued a statement clarifying that pharmacies do not hold a stock of potassium iodide tablets for preventive dispensing to the population and appealed to citizens to refrain from enquiring on telephone lines.

The ministry of health also recalled in this context that taking potassium iodide tablets is exclusively indicated in the event of a nuclear power plant accident and on instructions from the authorities. Taken at the right time, taking potassium iodide tablets can reduce or prevent the absorption of radioactive iodine-131 emitted by the damaged plant. But such a protective measure may prove necessary depending on the severity of the accident and the weather conditions up to distances of a few tens of kilometres.

For other scenarios, which would take place either at greater distances or which would concern other types of installations, taking potassium iodide tablets does not offer protection.
