On Thursday 18 June 2026, Luxembourg’s Ministry of Health and Social Security reminded the public to check their measles vaccination status before travelling, amid a resurgence of the disease in Europe and other parts of the world, particularly the United States (US).

According to the ministry, measles is a highly contagious disease that spreads through the air, particularly in enclosed and crowded places such as public transport. Symptoms usually begin with a high fever, tiredness, a runny nose, a cough and red eyes, followed by a skin rash. Although most people recover without lasting effects, serious complications can occur, particularly in infants, pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems.

The ministry stressed that vaccination remains the best protection against measles. In Luxembourg, the vaccine is recommended for the entire population and is generally administered as a combined measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine. Full protection requires two doses.

People who are unsure of their vaccination status are advised to consult their general practitioner (GP) or paediatrician, who can check their vaccination record and provide catch up vaccination if necessary. The ministry added that people born after 1970 who have not received two doses of the measles vaccine are particularly encouraged to complete their vaccination

The ministry added that anyone who develops a fever accompanied by a skin rash during or after travelling abroad should contact their doctor by telephone before attending in person and mention their recent travel. People with any questions are advised to contact their GP.
