A medical facility in Luxembourg came under fire on Wednesday after it was revealed that a 40-year-old woman had been misdiagnosed with breast cancer by the Laboratoire de Santé in spring.
Speaking with RTL, the woman concerned reported that a routine breast check-up resulted in her being diagnosed with cancer two weeks later and urged by her gynaecologist to undergo what she described as "a very radical operation".
A later surgical operation performed in Belgium revealed that the mother of four had been wrongly diagnosed with cancer for what was in fact a benign tumour. The mistake was reportedly the result of a sample mix-up and the Laboratoire National de Santé (LNS) issued an apology to the woman in the form of a letter, stating "We are aware that such a thing should not happen under any circumstances and we deeply regret that despite our best efforts in the field of quality assurance, misdiagnosis has been established".
The LNS further stated that new computer software had been implemented to avoid such an issue in the future, but the woman has deemed the situation "not acceptable" and has reportedly opened a legal case in pursuit of damages.
