The Grand Ducal Police reported that a joint inspection operation with the Luxembourg Customs and Excise Agency had been carried out at the Port of Mertert as part of measures to combat international drug trafficking and organised crime, as well as to strengthen the security of Luxembourg's national logistics infrastructure.

According to the police, the operation took place on Wednesday 8 July 2026.

The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg has been an active participant in the European Ports Alliance since its launch in Antwerp in January 2024. The initiative, established by the European Commission, aims to strengthen the resilience of ports and logistics platforms against threats linked to organised crime.

The police noted that logistics platforms play an essential role in European trade but are also targeted by criminal organisations seeking to exploit supply chains for the importation of drugs and other illicit goods. In response to the constantly evolving methods used by organised crime networks, the authorities consider it essential to strengthen inspections, develop information sharing and enhance cooperation between the competent services.

The operation at the Port of Mertert formed part of this approach. Officers from the Grand Ducal Police and the Luxembourg Customs and Excise Agency carried out targeted inspections of an inland cargo vessel, several containers, goods, transport vehicles and people present at the port site.

The inspections did not reveal any offences or irregularities.
