On the evening of 29 June 2017, Prime Minister and Minister of Communications and Media Xavier Bettel will attend the 20th anniversary of the Luxemburg Institute for Regulation, which will be held at the 'Schéiss' Cultural Centre.
Throughout the week, the ILR addressed one topic per day to describe the different missions of the ILR and the role of the services at its disposal.
The festivities will begin with the speech of the director, Luc Tapella, who will take the opportunity to look over the 20 years of the ILR's existence. Created in 1997 under the name of the Luxembourg Telecommunications Institute (ILT), the Luxembourg regulator has gained considerable experience in regulating markets, with the aim of fostering a competitive and open market. The director's speech will be followed by that of Prime Minister Xavier Bettel, who will discuss will the activities carried out by the ILR as well as its future missions to further support the Luxembourg economy.
The ILR's 20th anniversary was also an opportunity to describe the various missions of the ILR during the days preceding the festivities. In this context, the ILR has tackled a specific sector every day, from the electronic communications sector and the radio frequency service, to the postal and energy services sector.
Finally, it should be noted that the Institute was created in 1997 as part of the liberalisation of the telecommunications market. In 2000, the ILT became the ILR as a result of the extension of powers to regulate the electricity and postal markets. The ILR acts today in the interest of the consumer and ensures the smooth functioning of markets on the basis of effective and sustainable competition. In the form of a public institution, it assumes the regulation and supervision of the following economic sectors: electronic communications; electricity, natural gas; postal services; the railway market and airport charges.
