The Ministry of Sustainable Development and Infrastructure and the Department of the Environment have issued a warning regarding the increased risk of forest fires due to the current heatwave.
As a result of exceptionally high temperatures and the absence of precipitation, there is currently an increased risk of forest fires. Indeed, a long period of drought makes the forest extremely flammable.
It is therefore essential to be more vigilant in the forest during this period of drought, especially as most fires are caused by humans. Fire-fighting therefore begins with caution: avoid making a fire with barbeques for example, avoid dropping ignited objects such as cigarettes, and avoid leaving pieces of glass that cause fire.
The public is advised to park cars only on non-combustible, bituminous or non-grassed surfaces to avoid the risk of ignition and allow free access to forest roads for the passage of fire engines. Pedestrians should locate paths in order to know their quickest way out of the forest in case of fire. They should protect themselves by moving as far away as possible from the burned area.
Finally, it is important to inform the rescue services as soon as a cloud of smoke appears by calling 112, giving as much information as possible about the location of the fire and its surroundings. Convene a meeting point in a safe place to guide the emergency units to the scene of the fire. Stay on the phone until the emergency centre operator (112) has all the necessary information for quick and effective help.
