The oak processionery butterfly (Thaumetopoea processionea) has been spreading in Luxembourg for the last few years, and is increasingly populating areas used for recreation and settlements. The larvae of this species of butterflies not only damage oaks, but also pose a threat to human health.
The harmful potential is due to the burning hair of the caterpillars. The thrometopoetin contained in it can trigger allergic reactions in humans, which can result in unpleasant itching as well as skin infections. Irritations of the respiratory tract and the eyes cannot be ruled out.
The Ministry of the Environment and the Ministry of Health have created a leaflet with information on the biology of the oak processionary as well as on the hazards emanating from the caterpillars. In addition, preventive and protective measures are explained.
