The Luxembourg Ministry of Housing and Luxembourg Centre for Architecture (LUCA) have held a public conference on “Collective housing, density and height: a Luxembourg perspective”.
In Luxembourg, one of the greatest challenges in the housing sector is the optimised use of available land resources. As such, the Ministry of Housing launched a public debate on urban densification, especially that of high-rise construction.
This is an increasingly relevant topic in the Grand Duchy in view of a considerable migratory surplus and significant economic growth. The aim is to create a debate without preconceptions, abandon traditional models of high-rise constructions, as well as to develop new concepts and fix criteria for quality.
In order to launch this reflection process, the Ministry of Housing and LUCA organised a conference on the subject of “Collective housing, density and height: a Luxembourg perspective”.
The main speaker at the conference, Dr Massimo Bricocoli from the Politecnico di Milano, highlighted that, as a result of socio-economic changes in our society, traditional housing concepts should be reconsidered. Cohabitation, shared services, temporary housing and multi-local habitats are new trends in the housing sector, especially because of different family situations and multiple work environments.
Urban and economic development in Luxembourg requires the elaboration of new types of housing which confront the challenges regarding the use of available land resources, housing sustainability and accessibility.
