On the occasion of the “2016 Month of La Francophonie”, the Consulate General of Luxembourg is promoting two musical events featuring Luxembourg artists.
Firstly, as Artist in Residence, international chanteuse Adrienne Haan is starring in “BERLIN TO BROADWAY-TRANSATLANTIC” on Friday 18 March 2016 at 21:30 at the METROPOLITAN ROOM MANHATTAN (34 West 22nd Street – New York, NY 10010) - see http://metropolitanroom.com/event.cfm?id=234079
Produced by Carol Ostrow and Robert R. Blume, Haan will deliver an encore performance of the programme which was praised as “a moving performance. Haan established a close rapport with the audience through her informative, funny, and often moving commentary between sets.” The unforgettable evening features a musical voyage from 1920s Berlin to recent Broadway while singing klezmer / Hebrew music, French chansons by Jacques Brel and Edith Piaf, American Songbook favorites, and beloved Broadway showtunes in five different languages with Richard Danley on piano and Mike Campenni on drums.
Hailed as “An all-around entertainer of the highest calibre,” award-winning Adrienne Haan is one of Europe’s and America's most electrifying concert and cabaret stars. With a diverse repertoire that ranges from chanson to jazz, to blues, klezmer, and Broadway, Haan has a special passion for the music of the 1920s and 30s. This autumn, Haan made her Carnegie Hall debut to a sold-out audience in a special programme titled Tehorah, celebrating the 50th anniversary of German-Israeli diplomatic relations. Recent highlights include the debut of her new show, Rock le Cabaret!, a rock interpretation of French chansons by Brel, Piaf and Aznavour at the Cutting Room; and appearances at the Neue Galerie's Café Sabarsky and the Santa Fe Jewish Film Festival. Her latest CD Berlin, Mon Amour, hailed as “engaging and unique,“ is a tribute to 1920s and 30s Germany. Earlier recordings include I Could Have Danced All Night, and Born to Entertain.
A dual citizen of Luxembourg and Germany, Haan resides both in New York and Germany, and tours extensively worldwide.
Secondly, RINI featuring Luxembourg bass player Achal Murthy, will perform an Indian/Electronica and Rock concert on Friday 25 March 2016 at 19:00 at LEFTFIELD (Basement; 85 Ludlow Street – New York, NY 10002. Featuring Rini [Harini S. Raghavan], Vox/violin/electronics; Aleif Hamdan, Guitar; Achal Murthy, Bass; Ranajoy Das, Drums/cajon.
Born in Chennai, India, Rini [Harini S. Raghavan] is a New York based Singer, Songwriter and Violinist who blends Indian Classical and Popular music with Electronica and Rock. She has numerus performances and recordings to her credit, including recordings with Grammy winning composer A.R. Rahman and Bill Whelan. She is a graduate of the Berklee College of Music with a Major in Electronic Production and Design. She is an upcoming musical presence amongst the Indian diaspora in the US, performs across the country, and is a regular in New York City venues such as Silvana, Rockwood Music Hall, Bowery Electric and Alphabet Lounge. She recently released her first EP “Kural”, available on CD Baby, Spotify, iTunes, and other digital outlets.
Of Indian descent, Achal Murthy was born and raised in Luxembourg (Strassen). His musical journey through the many facets of the bass guitar started in 2008. That same year he attended the Jazz Department of the Luxembourg National Conservatory, under the guidance of Gast Walzing, David Laborier, Guy Cabet, and Jacques Pirotton. Upon finishing his electric bass studies with Romain Heck, Achal took up the upright bass, commencing his studies with Marc Demuth at the Conservatory of Echternach. Mainly focusing on Jazz, Murthy developed a keen interest in a wide variety of musical styles, ranging from progressive hard rock, traditional folk and of course classical music. Murthy is currently studying at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. Originally concentrating on Jazz composition and performance, Murthy has lately discovered his love for Music Therapy which he continues to explore and develop.
