The Luxembourg Independent Broadcasting Authority (ALIA), a public body created in late 2013, has launched its own website.
www.alia.lu was set up to provide public access to information on the regulation of audiovisual media services, with useful data on missions, fields of action and the decisions and opinions of the Authority. The ALIA monitors radio and television programmes having a concession or permission to broadcast in Luxembourg, it allocates frequencies for local and regional radio stations and is also responsible for classifying films released in theatres.
The website also shows information on developments in the field of regulation of audiovisual media at national and international level. ALIA is a member of the European Platform for Regulators (EPRA) and the European Regulators Group media services audiovisual (ERGA) established by the European Commission.
An equally important component among the missions of ALIA is to be attentive listeners and viewers. Thus, any natural or legal person who feels aggrieved by the content of a service may complain to ALIA - insofar as this content for example undermine the protection of minors, human dignity (race, opinion, religion or nationality) or when it contains elements of pornography.
The official website language is currently French. English and German versions will follow.
The Authority is based on the independent Broadcasting Commission (CIR) and the National Curriculum Council (CNP), regulatory bodies established by the Law on Electronic Media in 1991. While the CIR was the body in charge of frequency allocation for local and regional radio stations, the CNP monitored the content of radio and television channels in Luxembourg.
