On Saturday 17 June 2023, Luxembourg played an afternoon game against Liechtenstein in their third match of the EURO2024 men's football qualifiers, Group J.
In their first two matches, Luxembourg (ranked #91) earned just one point, in a 0-0 away draw to Slovakia; they then suffered a 6-0 defeat away to Portugal; on Saturday, they played their first home game of the qualifiers, with Liechtenstein (ranked #199) the visitors to the Stade de Luxembourg.
The other teams in the group are Iceland (ranked #64), Bosnia and Herzegovina (ranked #57), Slovakia (ranked #51) and Portugal (ranked #9).
On Saturday, Luxembourg defeated Liechtenstein 2 - 0, with Danel Sinani (59) and Gerson Rodrigues (89) the scorers.
With 73% of the possession, Luxembourg failed to break the deadlock in the first half and had to wait until there was just 30 minutes left on the clock to get their first score, with their second coming just a minute from the end of normal time. Out of 13 shots on goal by Luxembourg, nine were on target, with the visitors just having one shot on target the whole game.
Meanwhile, in evening matches on Saturday, Portugal defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina 3-0, with Slovakia winning 2-1 away to Iceland.
Luxembourg leapfrogged both Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Iceland, into 3rd position in the table. Their next game is on Tuesday 20 June, away to Bosnia and Herzegovina.
