On Tuesday 6 October 2026, Luxembourg's national football team suffered a home defeat against Bulgaria in their fourth 2026/27 UEFA Nations League Group C4 match at the Stade de Luxembourg in front of 8,027 spectators.
Following a victory and two defeats in their opening three matches, Jeff Strasser's team entered the second half of their Nations League campaign against the side they had beaten 2-1 in Plovdiv in September. Compared with Luxembourg's victory in the opening match, both coaches changed more than half of their starting line-ups.
Bulgaria registered the first attempt in the second minute, when Yoan Stoyanov tried his luck from outside the penalty area but sent his effort wide.
Luxembourg created their first opportunity five minutes later. A cross from the right reached Vincent Thill inside the Bulgarian penalty area, but his effort went over the crossbar. Omar Natami threatened again a minute later after breaking into the penalty area from the right, but was unable to direct his attempt on target.
Atanas Ribarski's team had struggled to threaten Anthony Moris' goal before taking the lead in the eighteenth minute. Emil Tsenov and Kristiyan Balov combined on the left, with the latter moving towards the penalty area before firing a low effort into the bottom corner beyond Moris to make it 0-1.
Martin Minchev had an opportunity to double the visitors' advantage shortly afterwards, shooting from the right side of the Luxembourg penalty area, but pressure from the defence and a save from Moris denied the Bulgarian forward.
Luxembourg registered their first shot on target in the 26th minute. Vincent Thill struck from around twenty metres and, although the effort was directed towards Daniel Naumov, the Bulgaria goalkeeper needed two attempts to bring the ball under control.
Three minutes later, Georgi Rusev made a run down the right and into the Luxembourg penalty area before sending a low effort towards the far corner, but Moris made a save with his foot. The resulting follow-up from around eleven metres went wide.
Rusev received the first yellow card of the match a few minutes later following a foul on Florian Bohnert.
The Bulgaria midfielder was involved again in the 34th minute as the visitors doubled their advantage. Rusev delivered a cross from the left into the centre of the penalty area, where Atanas Iliev met the ball first time and fired it into the net to make it 0-2.
Stefan Velkov was shown Bulgaria's second yellow card in the 41st minute for stopping a Luxembourg attack, with the visitors taking their two-goal advantage into half-time.
Jeff Strasser made three changes at the break, with Tiago Pereira replacing Anthony Moris in goal and the captain's armband passing to Dirk Carlson, while Mathias Olesen and Aiman Dardari replaced Enzo Duarte and Jayson Videira respectively.
Bulgaria created the first notable opportunity after the restart, with Atanas Iliev heading over the crossbar in the 54th minute.
Luxembourg came close to reducing the deficit on the hour mark. Vincent Thill found Omar Natami inside the penalty area, but Daniel Naumov saved his effort towards the far corner. Thill was first to the loose ball, but the rebound struck him and went wide.
Three minutes later, Hamza Kadamani delivered a low ball into the penalty area from the left towards Natami at the far post, whose effort was blocked by the Bulgarian defence. Tomas Moreira then tried his luck from distance, forcing Naumov to turn the ball behind for a corner.
The Grand Duchy's team continued to build through positional attacks over the following ten minutes, while Bulgaria looked to threaten on the counter. One such attack created an opportunity in the 75th minute, when Martin Minchev crossed from the left towards substitute Vladimir Nikolov, whose header went a couple of metres wide of the post.
Luxembourg responded four minutes later. Natami entered the penalty area after receiving a pass from Kadamani but sent his effort into the side-netting.
Mathias Olesen then struck from around 23 metres in the 81st minute, but his effort went straight into the hands of Naumov. Aiman Dardari tested the Bulgaria goalkeeper from a similar distance five minutes later, with Naumov again making the save.
Bulgaria responded almost immediately through Yoan Stoyanov, whose curling effort from outside the penalty area went wide of the far post.
Jeff Strasser's team had another opportunity in the 89th minute. Timothe Rupil delivered a free-kick into the Bulgarian penalty area and, following an aerial challenge, the ball fell to Olesen, who struck a first-time effort from around ten metres, but Naumov was again on hand to make the save.
The final whistle confirmed a 0-2 defeat for Luxembourg, their third consecutive loss in the 2026/27 UEFA Nations League following their opening victory over Bulgaria in Plovdiv.
The defeat dropped Luxembourg to the bottom of Group C4. A draw between Estonia and Iceland in the other group match left the Baltic side in second place, while Iceland remain top of the group with eight points.
Jeff Strasser's team will next face Estonia at the Stade de Luxembourg on Friday 13 November 2026, before concluding their Nations League campaign away against Iceland on Monday 16 November 2026.
