With a host of the original characters still on board, but alas without the beloved Jar Jar Binx, and others brought in, The Force Awakens blends familiarity with freshness. The special effects make the film stand out even more than its predecessors but this is not what makes Star Wars so special. It is about good vs evil and "the dark force", with viewers earerly awaiting sightings of stange alien beings which seem to all understand each other despite speaking different languages. Yes, the spaceships and various planets are also staggering, but Star Wars is about the collective.

Viewers do not have to have seen the other six Star Wars films to see The Force Awakens. True to style, the film starts with the similar format story update which tells us that Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) is the last Jedi left and has gone awol, with a search on to locate him. As this film is set 30 years after the defeat of the Galactic Empire, many people (and alien beings) have heard stories but don't belive they actually happened. Other scenes feature Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) who is looking for her son to return...

One such young person reared on inter-galactic stories is Rey (Daisy Ridley, surely a huge star of the future following a commanding performance here) who works as a scavenger and gets paid for looting crashed spacecraft for certain parts. She comes across BB-8, an android, and Finn (John Boyega) a disillusioned stormtrooper who defects and escapes. Together the three come across Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and Chewbacca and the five embark on a new adventure to fight against the emerging First Order who are attempting to rule the galaxy.

Along with the inter-galactic adventure scenes and others alternating between deserts and forests, the high-octane battles also feature a series of clever and witty dialogue, again in true Star Wars style!
