On Thursday 23 October 2025, Greenpeace Luxembourg will hold an awareness event at Place Guillaume II (Knuedler) in Luxembourg-Ville, dedicated to the Amazon rainforest and the urgent need to protect it from ongoing deforestation and degradation.
The event will mark the arrival of the giant “amazonia” letters, which, after travelling through several major European capitals, will reach their final destination in the Grand Duchy, ten days before the opening of the United Nations Climate Conference (COP30) in Belém, Brazil.
According to Greenpeace Luxembourg, the objective is to alert the public to the increasing threats facing this unique forest and to the struggles of Indigenous peoples who defend it daily.
The highlight of the day will take place at 19:30, with an immersive sound and light show projected onto the letters installed on Place Guillaume II. The show will tell the story of the Amazon, its beauty, its biodiversity, and the peoples who live there, as well as its destruction, which Greenpeace says must urgently be stopped. The performance will be supported by Luxembourg punk-folk band Schëppe Siwen. From 16:00, the public will be able to participate in a range of creative workshops.
Greenpeace Luxembourg recalled that the Amazon plays a vital role in regulating the global climate and is home to millions of people and exceptional biodiversity. Yet, in just fifty years, more than 17% of its surface area has disappeared. If deforestation continues at this rate, the forest could reach a critical point beyond which it will no longer be able to regenerate, endangering the planet’s climate balance - with consequences felt as far as Luxembourg.
The organisation added that in November, Brazil will host the next COP30. Greenpeace is mobilising to ensure that the protection of the Amazon and other primary forests is placed at the heart of global priorities, and that concrete measures for their preservation are finally adopted at an international level.
