On Tuesday 29 April 2025, Luxembourg’s Ministry of the Environment, Climate and Biodiversity, in cooperation with the National Roads Administration, the Grand Ducal Police and the Upper Sûre Nature Park, announced the launch of a joint initiative to remove abandoned fishing boats from the Upper Sûre lake area.
To date, 34 boats have been recorded around Lultzhausen as part of this initiative.
According to the ministry and its partners, the reservoir, located in the heart of the Upper Sûre Nature Park, serves as both a vital resource and a popular destination for nature and leisure enthusiasts. In addition to its primary function as the national drinking water reserve, the lake provides an "ideal setting" for activities such as water sports, hiking and relaxation, attracting numerous visitors each year.
However, the presence of "heavily deteriorated" fishing boats has prompted justified complaints, underlining the need for a thorough clean-up operation. These boats pose potential risks to the environment, user safety and visitor comfort.
Identified owners have received official notifications along with information on possible solutions. Boats for which ownership could not be determined have been designated for removal, stated the ministry and its campaign partners.
In the coming years, other areas of the Upper Sûre lake will be subject to similar initiatives.
